New Ubiquiti Network Setup

Time to have some fun today! Getting new Ubiquiti Inc switches, Wireless Access Points and CloudKey+ controller setup for my client in Cleveland, OH: Adherex Group – makers of Stretchtape and other fine packaging products.

I have been working on updating their network to expand into new areas that they are renovating. This process has included running new Category 6 ethernet cables to new offices, conference room and cubicles. This network expansion allows for additional wireless access points to give them full building Wi-Fi coverage for future inventory management devices. We are also planning for future expansion to add security cameras. We are using Ubiquiti equipment for this project. Here’s the list of items that are being deployed:

Before unboxing the goodies

We will also be integrating their existing AC-Pro WAPs into the system and retiring their existing Unifi Network Server application that is currently installed on their corporate server. After unboxing everything, I got it temporarily setup for staging. This process involves setting up the CloudKey+ to be associated with this client site, adopting the switches and WAPs and configuring the network and Wi-Fi settings and of course firmware / OS / Application updates. Once everything is adopted and configured, it is ready to be deployed.

Staging everything before it is deployed to their final locations

They have a Main Distribution Frame (MDF) (on the west end of the building), an existing Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) (on the east end of the building) connected to a fiber optic cable and I will be adding an additional IDF (in the middle section of the building) connected with a 10G rated Category 6 copper cable. This is an extremely large building measuring approximately 600 feet long and 200 feet wide. So having 2 IDFs was necessary to keep future cable lengths within Ethernet specifications of 100 m or 328ft. The intention was to add Ethernet lines to various areas of the building so the wireless access points and security cameras can eventually be installed. On this portion of this project, we are only running network cables for hard lines to offices for PCs and phones and the WAPs. In a future phase of the project we will be adding lines for security cameras.
